4 th lesson: Game Notation

Dear students,

today we want to see how to use chess-notation. Each move is noted. At first you see the letter of the piece that moves, then the letter and number of the square where the piece, which moves in on, or the easier variant, where it moves. The King is noted with "K", the Queen with "Q", the rooks with"R", the Bishops with "B", the Knights with"N" (Not with "K", because the king is noted with it already and that would lead to confusion). The Pawn is noted with "P", but it`s not usual to use a letter for the pawn, only the square where it moves, eg e4. If the Queen moves to f3, then it`s noted: Qf3. The numbers show the sequence of the moves, the white move is noted first, then the move of the player with the black pieces. For example: 1. e4...e5, 2. Nf3...Nc6, 3. d4...d6 and so on.But the kinds of moves are noted too:

check: +, checkmate: #, short castling: 0-0, long castling: 0-0-0, capturing: x (sometimes, eg in Russia :,but i know it with: x), capturing en passant " e.p. (eg fxe4 e.p.) and if you analyze a game (Adwanced): good move: !, Bad move: ? But players use only the notation letters those are here written in red colour. Example: Queen gives checkmate on h4: Qh4#, or it captures a piece: Qxh4.If it gives check: Qh4+. Castling is only noted with 0-0 or 0-0-0, without more letters.

Please play that example by following link: www.apronus.com/chess/wbeditor.php

The moves in this game are noted as follows:

1. c4 ...e6

2. Nf3...d5

3. d4...Nf6

4. Nc3..Be7

5.Bg5...0-0

6. e3...h6

7.Bh4...b6

8.c x d5...N x d4 and so on.

here the shortest example of a game (fools mate), but please don`t expect that anyone plays so badly that he `ll be mated after 2 moves smile

1. f3...e6

2.g4... Qh4#

can you imagine why it`s called "fools mate"?

that will be shown in the next lesson. For assignment: Please answer to the polls in our  (forum)
